Super Coupe Cup 2020/21
In 1995 the Super Coupe Cup was launched when a number of one make championships were, due to a major recession, cancelled by the manufacturers. Eighty cars owned by privateers found they had nowhere to go to race. Dave Pierce, Jeff Wyatt, and James Tucker plus a few others, got together to set up a set of rules.
To begin with, if you were in one of the cancelled championships, you used that championship's rules. The cars all had similar pace and had a common tyre from Dunlop.
The Super Coupe Club was set up with membership to pay the expenses of printing, telephone bills and postage. They approached the BRSCC, who set up a series of 8 races and away it went, with 20-25 cars on each grid. Honda CRX and Volkswagen Polo G40 to begin with, Renault 5 Turbo and Rover 216 GTI saloons joined in later.
Dunlop gave a commission on the tyres to pay for cups and to support the organiser’s expenses.
The 2020 Super Coupe Cup feels that the 998cc 3 cylinder engined cars in a number of manufacturers 3 door Coupes, have all the same Toyota engine, which is strong and ideal for supercharging. This means cars that are already running can just add the new Club Kit to the existing car which has all of the safety equipment required by the governing body, Motorsport UK. Cars fitted with Bilstein suspension do not need to change and the brakes can be assisted by a brake bius valve as in the G40's in 1994.
The Rotrex Supercharger will double the 998cc engine's performance from 68bhp to close to 120bhp. from 13.9sec to 60mph on to 7.5sec to 60mph and 170kph or 100mph in 3rd. There are around 300 of these cars sitting in garages, their values are dropping as they are unable to race. The existing grids are too small, and the cars are a little too slow to race sucessfully elsewhere. Make the cars quicker and they will be great fun. A great value, first proper race car.
They all have their modifications include extinguishers and roll cages, and for a small budget they will be able to race in a car as quick as a Polo G40, a Mini Cooper or a Honda CRX, with the present teams able to share the car in endurance races. Existing Championship rules will be adopted, the new kit will be integrated into the Super Coupe Series rules.
